Coffee is an integral part of the country’s cultural identity. They are obsessed with the quality of their beans, so we all benefit from the delicious specialty single origin coffee beans they produce.
Every bean is picked by hand and determined to be ready to harvest or not. This is one of the reasons why the country has a reputation for its superior quality Colombian coffee beans. The hard work and passion of the 540,000 smallholder family farms around the country have helped put Colombia on the map as the world’s third largest coffee producer and exporter and one of the most popular brews.
Merlo’s Colombia Single Origin coffee beans are 100% arabica, yielding an intense aroma, rich flavour and excellent balance of acidity and body.
Colombian Coffee Beans: A Rich Heritage
It’s believed that Dutch Jesuits introduced coffee to Colombia approximately 300 years ago. By the start of the 20th century, most production was operated on large farmland at altitudes up to 17,000 meters above sea level.
The Great Depression in the 1920s saw many large farms, called haciendas, go out of business, so the government bought the land and sold it off to small farming families. The farmers grew coffee beans alongside other plants, so they were not reliant on one source of income. By dividing up the land, the government’s decision helped save the Colombian coffee industry.
The farmers are well supported by The National Coffee Research Centre, Cenicafe, which gives them advice and information on ensuring they continue to grow superior quality coffee beans. As a result of this support, Colombia’s position in the world as a leading coffee producer and exporter is well-deserved.
While there are seven common varietals, at Merlo, we source the Caturra varietal for our Colombia Single Origin coffee. Caturra is a natural mutation of Bourbon varietal, first discovered in Brazil in 1937. The plants are shorter and more compact than Bourbon, so farmers can plant them closer together for higher yields.
