There’s something exotic about drinking coffee from the first-known country to cultivate it. And what better endorsement of this exceptional Ethiopian coffee than the daily ritual that locals hold 2-3 times a day, called a coffee ceremony. It involves the host harvesting, roasting and brewing the beans at home.
It’s quite a social event and an essential part of their lives. The country consumes over half of their coffee production while still being the 5th largest exporter. It’s no wonder it’s become one of the world’s favourite brews.
With flavours of apricot, orange, and milk chocolate, with cedar and honey aromas, our Ethiopian single origin coffee is an irresistible combination of flavours.
Ethiopia: The birthplace of African coffee
Ethiopia has many legends about how its coffee was discovered, even whether it was the first country to find coffee plants. A popular version is from around 850AD, where a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats had unusually high energy after eating the cherries.
Taking them back to the monastery, the monks said the Ethiopia coffee beans were the devil’s work, so they were thrown into a fire. The aroma of the roasting beans was tantalising enough for the monks to put out the fire and put the beans in a jug with hot water to preserve them. Legend has it they later drank the brew and discovered it kept them awake for nightly devotions.
Whatever the truth, Ethiopia will always be known as the birthplace of coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is grown at a very high altitude, between 1450-2050 meters above sea level, which gives it concentrated flavours not found in lower altitudes - the perfect conditions for the perfect harvests for our single origin coffee beans.
The farmers use the washed method, producing a clean, crisp, and acidic coffee. It’s African coffee at its finest.
